For a long time news only travelled as far as a boat could sail, a horse could run or a foot-post could walk. This dependency ended in the 19th century. New technology brought the regions of Denmark closer together and reduced the distance between country and town. The advent of the telegraph in 1854 and the first Funen telephone exchange in 1884 brought the residents of Funen's countryside closer to its towns and villages and thus the surrounding world.
