Visit the Romantic Gardens of Sanderumgaard

The romantic landscape gardens covering 15 hectares are located at the Sanderumgaard Estate at the south edge of Odense. The gardens were originally laid out by Johan Bülow form 1793 to 1828, and today, almost two centuries after Bulow's death, the gardens have been revived, following an extended restoration project performed on the initiative af the present owners Susanne and Erik Vind.

Johan Bülow was very interested in the then modern style of romantic landscape gardening. In the spirit of the time, he erected gazebos and memorials at suitable spots in the gardens. These were made of simple materials and each was designed to stimulate the garden's visitors to think about human enterprise and Nature, to give free reign to their imagination and to invite reflection. The locations were carefully selected so they invited visitors to brief stops, lengthy rests or meditative visits, but some also served as indispensable elements in the garden's vantage points.

Fine, varying scenery was inteded to be visible from a number of ideal spots in the gardens. Visitors were led over canals and ditches across bridges and footbridges and further through the gardens along well-laid-out winding paths. Visitors were let into more secluded, intimate areas through finely crafted gates. The gardens were also intended to be experienced from the water. Visitors could navigate rowing boats along winding canals and across glassy ponds to the gardens' many evocative monuments and varying sections.

You can experience this by visiting the gardens which will open to the public on 26 May.
